Norway, one‑sided silver trial strike (1964)
Norway, one‑sided silver trial strike without legend. Crowned lion with axe within crowned shield. Extremely Fine to Mint State condition. Rønning p. 31; NMB p. 519. 35 mm; 14.62 g.
This trial piece was produced for the 150th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution in 1964. Engraver Øyvind Hansen prepared a series of models, and the Royal Norwegian Mint struck six trial pieces before the final design was approved. To ensure completion in time for 17 May, the Royal Norwegian Mint had to order planchets from The Royal Mint in London.
The trial strikes from this process are scarce and illustrate the development leading to the finished 10‑kroner silver coin.
