Rare Norwegian coins: Norway’s most valuable dates and types
Which Norwegian coins are the rarest, and why? From Olav Kyrre's pennies and the archbishop's skillings to the Schydtz coins of 1689…
Norwegian 5 kroner coins in copper-nickel, here a 1969 coin from the reign of Olav V in choice mint state. The coin is photographed, has its own protocol number and is guaranteed genuine.

For almost ninety years, 5 kroner in Norway was a banknote. During the Scandinavian Monetary Union the member countries could strike 5 kroner in gold, but Norway never did. The 5 kroner coin arrived in 1963, struck in copper-nickel, weighing 11.5 grams and measuring 29.5 mm.
Norges Bank lists Olav V’s first type, struck 1963–1973, with the king’s portrait and motto on the obverse and the crowned national arms on the reverse. A second type followed in 1974–1991. Several 5 kroner commemoratives were also issued, starting with two in 1975. Under Harald V, a coin with his portrait was struck in 1992–1994, and in 1998 the present smaller 5 kroner with a hole was introduced.
Copper-nickel coins in mint state should have full lustre and no handling marks on the portrait. Older Norwegian denominations are found under Norway after 1874.
No. Norges Bank lists the 5 kroner of 1963–1973 as no longer valid from 9 July 2000. Norges Bank also lists the 5 kroner coins of 1963–1997 among withdrawn coins that can be exchanged.
The first 5 kroner coin is dated 1963. Before that, 5 kroner existed only as a banknote in Norway.
