Norway, “I will defend my country” 1897

Norway, silver medal “Jeg vil værge mit land” (“I will defend my country”) from 1897, engraved by Throndsen. Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition. A farm boy in national costume with topplue, standing before a standing stone. Battle axe in his right hand and supporting himself with his left on the Norwegian coat of arms. On the standing stone: NORGES RIGES GRUNDLOV 17 MAI 1814. Reverse variant of Støren & Holst with a laurel wreath only, instead of the usual oak‑and‑laurel wreath and the inscription “17DE MAI 1897”. Engraved “R. Kjos”. Støren & Holst 144 var. 27 × 30.5 mm; 8.96 g.
