Rare Norwegian coins: Norway’s most valuable dates and types
Which Norwegian coins are the rarest, and why? From Olav Kyrre's pennies and the archbishop's skillings to the Schydtz coins of 1689…
Norwegian 1 krone coins from the reign of Haakon VII in copper-nickel: a holed krone from 1950 and two later coins without a hole, dated 1951 and 1953, all in or near mint state and guaranteed genuine.

The 1 krone was introduced in 1875, and the first coins also carried the old value 30 skilling. Under Oscar II and, from 1908, Haakon VII, the krone was struck in silver until 1917. From 1925 it returned in copper-nickel with a hole in the centre: a cross of four crowned H7 monograms on one side, and the chain of the Order of St. Olav with the motto ALT FOR NORGE on the other. The holed type was struck until 1951.
In 1951 a new krone without a hole appeared, with the crowned Norwegian lion on a shield. SNL distinguishes a variant struck only in 1951 from the coins of 1953–1957. After Haakon VII died in 1957, Olav V’s krone with a rearing horse followed in 1958.
On the holed coins, check for wear on the monograms and around the hole. Copper-nickel can develop spots and dull toning, so full lustre counts for coins in mint state. Other denominations from the same period are found under Norway after 1874.
The holed 1 krone in copper-nickel was struck under Haakon VII from 1925 to 1951. The hole returned in 1997 with the current krone of Harald V.
Both exist. 1951 is the last year of the holed type and the first year of the new type without a hole, so check the coin or the catalogue number.
