About 5 øre

A bronze coin that went to war

The 5 øre was introduced in 1875 as the largest of the three bronze coins. It weighs 8 grams and measures 27 mm. Under Oscar II it shows the crowned lion on a shield, while Haakon VII’s coins from 1908 carry his crowned monogram. During the First World War bronze was short, and the 5 øre was struck in iron in 1917–1920.

The occupation coins of 1941–1945

During the German occupation the copper in bronze was needed for the war industry. The 5 øre, 2 øre and 1 øre were therefore struck in iron, and the royal crown and Haakon VII’s monogram were removed from the design. After the war, coins were again struck in copper alloys. Olav V’s large 5 øre with an elk (1958–1973) was followed by a small coin with the lion, struck until 1982.

What to look for

Iron rusts easily, so wartime coins without rust spots and with original surfaces are the most sought after. More denominations are found under Norway after 1874.
