An online coin auction of our own was the biggest news when Denarius launched its new website in 2017. Technology ages and has to be renewed from time to time, and this time it was Denarius that got a makeover. After more than a year of development, we presented a brand-new homepage with a new design and modern features.

Denarius’ first online coin auction
The most important new feature was that Denarius would now host its own online auctions. The plan was to run themed auctions in addition to regular auctions, and Norwegian objects were of course to be sold to the highest bidder. The commission was a modest 10 %, which meant that bidders could make some fantastic bargains.
The first online coin auction was themed: it featured coins from the legendary find from the Akerendam, a ship of the Dutch East India Company.
Coins from the Akerendam wreck at Runde
The Akerendam sank off the island of Runde near Ålesund in 1725. She was on her way to Batavia, today’s Jakarta, and went down with gold ducats and thousands of silver coins on board. The wreck was found by divers in 1972, and some 15 of the roughly 400 coin types in the find were previously unknown. Coins from the wreck are still sought after by collectors. You can read more about the ship on Wikipedia.
Coins of all ages from all over the world
Since Denarius was founded, the goal has been to offer our customers as broad a selection of coins as possible: coins of all ages and from all four corners of the world. It was therefore quite deliberate that the first online auction offered coins from the Runde find – Dutch coins, struck for trade in Asia, found on the Norwegian coast.
Denarius was founded by Marius Ringsrud, who studied classical archaeology at the University of Oslo and Uppsala University, and is based in Oslo. Every object is examined, photographed, described and given its own protocol number, and everything we sell is guaranteed genuine.
